New Garbo fragances by Grès

The Austrian perfum company Grès, will release (spring 2009) three Garbo dedicated fragances. The three fragrances of the Parfums Grès Collection Hommage à Greta Garbo will be offered as Eau de Parfum in 60 ml bottles. The names are: Mythos, Sphinx and Goddess.

Press Release: Launch of the Parfums Grès Collection – Hommage à Greta Garbo

A year after the release of Hommage à Marlene Dietrich, Parfums Grès is preparing to launch a new trio of scents dedicated this time to Garbo called Hommage à Greta Garbo which will launch in the spring of 2009. Like Marlene Dietrich, Garbo was one of the famous customers of couturière Madame Grès.

The set comprises Mythos, Sphinx, Goddess in reference to the particular charisma that exuded from the star whom people could not wait to see laugh at long last in what must have been the most self-conscious laugh in history in Ninotchka (1939). And she did, beautifully so, and a bit strangely at the same time.

Greta Garbo in

"With her classic beauty, her noble aura and an occasional playful wink of the eye, she (Greta Garbo) fascinated both men and women. The fact that she loved being alone and hated the media frenzy enhanced her appeal to the public. In the course of her 19-year film career in which she made 27 films, she gave only 14 interviews.

She was referred to as „the Goddess" or the „Swedish Sphinx". In contrast to other Hollywood stars she never gave an autograph, never attended the premieres of her films and never answered fan mail. In spite of this, she had a powerful effect on her times and the fashion of her day. The way she wore her make-up, styled her hair and dressed greatly influenced the trends of the Thirties." ...

Parfums Grès Collection – Hommage à Greta Garbo

Mythos – Hommage à Greta Garbo is a floral fruity perfume that interprets elegance in a new and youthful way, for fruity notes are especially popular with younger women. The head note tantalizes with the scents of apples, oranges, black currants and pineapple. The classic, elegant floral accents unfold in the heart note - rose, freesia and peony - typical ingredients found in sophisticated French perfumes. Subtle sensuousness permeates the whole fragrance composition through the delicate base note of musk, sandalwood and iris.

Sphinx – Hommage à Greta Garbo is a delicate fresh-floral perfume. The essences of exotic blossoms blend in a refined manner with woody and fruity fragrances. First the delicate scents of litchi, peach and Yuzu (a precious citrus fruit from Asia) captivate the senses. After a few minutes the exhilarating heart note of lotus blossoms, rose petals and white peony unfolds, then merges perfectly with the discreetly disarming base notes of cedar, musk and patchouli.

Goddess – Hommage à Greta Garbo is a floral-oriental perfume, a fragrance that expresses the elegant sensuousness of the great artist. In Goddess the most beautifully eroticizing fragrance essences delicately cast their spell: The head note mesmerises with plum, mandarin orange and cardamom. In the heart note, a voluptuous cocktail of cinnamon, heliotrope and jasmine unfolds. The base note beguiles with sandalwood, moss, vanilla and ambergris, merging wonderfully with the skin. The bottle and packaging were designed by the Parisian design studio Aesthete.

The three fragrances of the Parfums Grès Collection Hommage à Greta Garbo will be offered as Eau de Parfum in 60 ml bottles, each at a price of CHF 89.00 or Euro 59.00. Available as of Spring 2009 at selected perfumeries.

Garbo and Marlene Dietrich making out in Mr. S's swimming pool?

In the 2003 released Frank Sinatra book, Mr. S: My Life with Frank Sinatra by George Jacobs and William Stadiem, they write that Jacobs once catched Dietrich and Garbo in Sinatra's pool, swimming naked and kissing. You can find the story  HERE!

Mr. S: My Life with Frank Sinatra Cover
the book

Anyway, rumor is that Hollywood is now making a film based on Jacobs life starring Chris Tucker. We wonder if they will include the 'pool' scene. LOL

Jacobs, was the right hand of Frank Sinatra from 1953 to 1968. He arguably had one of the coolest jobs in the world at the time when Sinatra was the undisputed master of the entertainment universe. Jacobs rose from his humble beginnings in New Orleans to join Sinatra in the mansions of Beverly Hills, the penthouses of Manhattan, the palaces of Europe, the pinnacles of world power. George Jacobs saw it all, did it all.

Ever wanted to know how GG's summerhouse in Hårby ( Sweden) looks now?

Hårby was Garbo's Swedish home. It was the first house she purchased. Hårby gård was a large estate in Sweden. It is situated on Lake Sillen outside the town of Gnesta in the county of Södermanland. An hour's train ride southwest of Stockholm. It was a beautiful thousand-acre forested estate with fifteen-room manor house.

Garbo purchased it in 1936, for her mother and her brother Sven and his family. Hårby is slightly 40 Milessouthwest of Stockholm, on the mainland. The Estate covered 1000 acres and dated back to the 16th Century when it was owned by the noble family of Leuhus. It was owned by Greta between 1936 -1947.Garbo's brother Sven took care of the estate and lived their, along with his family and mother, from 1937- 1939, until they moved to California.

Mini scene from the  Mata Hari: Uncensored Version

Various books wrote how the film was a victim of censorship when it was re-released in 1938/1939. Some scenes were cut out to satisfy the Hays Office. In spring 2005 the uncensored version of the film was shown in Brussels/Belgium at the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique. Warner is aware of it and it is now up to them to restore the film and release it on DVD. More info about the film  HERE!

The Uncensored Version does contain the following scenes and takes:

The Mata Hari's dance scene at the beginning is much longer. The original dance scene goes on and on. Most revealing as Garbo continues in a frenetic dance to approach the statue of Shiva. She does is in such a suggestive way, that she seems to imply that she actually makes love with it. In the last shot she takes the top off and we see her from behind – totally nude. See a short snippet here:

Garbo talks - complete film on YouTube

See a clips on Daniel's (pventertainment) Youtube channel. Go  HERE!

Garbo Talks is a 1984 film directed by Sidney Lumet. The movie stars Anne Bancroft as a terminally ill woman who asks her son, Gilbert, to help her fulfill her last wish: to meet Greta Garbo. As her son, played by Ron Silver, carries out his search for Garbo, he confronts his relationship with his wife and an interest in a struggling actress.

The movie was written by Larry Grusin and stars Bancroft, Silver, Carrie Fisher, Catherine Hicks and Steven Hill. Bancroft was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in the film. Supporting roles include: Howard Da Silva and Dorothy Loudon, a down-on-his-luck paparazzo and his agent, Harvey Fierstein, a gay man that Gilbert meets on the Fire Island ferry, and Hermione Gingold, a nearly-senile actress who once worked with the elusive Garbo. Rumor was that Garbo played herself in this film but actually it is b roadway songwriter Betty Comden.

Teaser for a new Garbo feature film?

We just saw something truly wonderful. You can see a short trailer teaser for another planned 'Garbo Feauture Film'  (not to be confused with the Buddy Bregman production), directed by Italian director, writer and photographer Ketch Rossi.

Some caps. Yelena Popovic as Greta Garbo and Matt Stasi as John Gilbert

‘Garbo' is a 7 minutes teaser.  Rossi was asked to do this little piece of art for a friend, who wrote the script for a feature film based on Garbo's life. The teaser was much appreciated by the producer but further work on this ‘Garbo' film project, was shelved.

Maybe they put the production on hold until they find a more known director, to give their project some weight in Hollywood. The truly wonderful piece of work is Rossi's directorial debut and was shot in one day with a mini budget, on a beautiful Downtown LA penthouse hotel set in the twenties.

See the Trailer  HERE!

If this is going to be turned into a full feature film? We are trying to find out.

The man who gave us one of Garbo's best books, A Cinematic Legacy, is releasing his book on Thalberg this month.

Mark Vieira has an undisputed eye for beauty, especially the glamorized beauty of Hollywood's golden studio era. A portrait photographer, film historian, and the author of four previous volumes — Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits, Sin in Soft Focus: Pre-Code Hollywood, Hollywood Horror: From Gothic to Cosmic, and of course, Greta Garbo: A Cinematic Legacy, all published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. — Vieira graciously forwarded me his latest Abrams publication, Hollywood Dreams Made Real: Irving Thalberg and the Rise of M-G-M.

Little Girl

Sothbey's offers a collection of early Greta Garbo postcards and photographs owned by Garbo's childhood friend, Lisa Fager. The lot to be auctioned in London on July 17th.

It includes:

I) a collection of fifteen photographs of Greta Garbo (Gustaffson), her classmates and 'Aunt Gustafsson', chiefly original prints, one of the portraits the only print to survive from the six copies which Garbo herself ordered from a professional photographer but then tore up, ranging in size from a small passport-size portrait of her in 1918 to large school class photographs of c.165 x 230mm. (plus mounts), chiefly c.1915-1930, traces of mounting

II) an early autograph postcard signed G.G. by Garbo (Greta Gustafsson), sending greetings in Swedish, written in pencil, with a mock-postage stamp also drawn in pencil [literal translation:] "May the sun of joy [shine] its rays in such a way upon you on your celebration day, may happiness not stray from you I wish that out of my heart" Garbo delivered this card herself after school through Lisa Fager's letterbox.

III) an autograph four-line note signed by Garbo (G.G.), in Swedish, written in ink on a magazine illustration [literal translation:] "...Hanne how sweet I think you are. I have seen you so many times and all equally enchanting..."

iv) two autograph postcards written to Lisa Fager by Greta Garbo's brother Sven Gustafsson, in Swedish, sending greetings from a festive Paris and from London, 1928-1930 Some of this material is illustrated in John Wallin's book Garbo: En stjärnas väg (Stockholm, 1955), a copy of which is included in the lot.

Queen Christina (1933) also ran into censor difficulties, but these were over its portrayal of the queen's fictitious heterosexual romance; the more authentic love affair between the queen (Greta Garbo) and Countess Ebba (Elizabeth Young) was allowed to remain.

Garbo portraits at Edward Steichen exhibition in Italy

Forty years after his death, the original prints made by Edward Steichen (1879-1973) for Vanity Fair and Vogue have only now become available for public inspection.

Edward Steichen : High Fashion & Lives is the title of the exhibition to be held at 'Palazzo Magnani' and at 'Chiostri di San Domenico' in Reggio Emilia, from 1th May to 8th June 2008. The Italian exhibition shows 450 of his iconic portraits from Greta Garbo to Winston Churchill. Many of the photographs were taken in Steichen's capacity as chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair.

Steichen photographs of Garbo

Steichen photographs of Garbo are really amazing just because she is seen in her natural mood - without the sometimes heavy costumes and make up of the MGM productions.

Camille screening at a Venice tribute to George Cukor!

Schermi d'Amore, a Veronese festival of romantic and melodramatic cinema, each year explores those aspects of the emotional universe which refer back to a single, strong root: love, in all its forms and nuances.

The motto is: Cinema is female – A tribute to George Cukor.

The movie will be screened at April 11th on 14:30.

"Twenty years since the death of the great director, few people give George Cukor his dues for the important role he played in the construction of the great monument to cinema we today perceive as the golden age of the Hollywood star system.

We wanted to pay tribute to him with 16 films we consider best represent his long career, regardless of how successful they were at the box office. It's also a chance to see some of cinema history's forgotten gems. And so, as well as the unmissable classics A Star is Born, Camille and The Philadelphia Story, we have recovered Justine, based on the novel by Lawrence Durrell and Travels with my Aunt, from a story by Graham Greene."

New book about MGM's number one costume designer !

There is a new book coming up on Adrian in April and there will be some things on Garbo.  The title of the book is Adrian: silver screen to custom label

Garbo and Adrian on the Camille set

About Adrian and the book

Greta Garbo's cocked hat in Romance, Judy Garland's blue-and-white-gingham pinafore in The Wizard of Oz, Katharine Hepburn's white and silver gown in The Philadelphia Story: these stunning film looks were all created by fashion designer Gilbert Adrian.

From 1924 to 1941, Adrian designed the costumes for dozens of films featuring the stars of Hollywood's golden age. In 1942 Adrian opened his own couture and ready-to-wear business, featuring elegant designs characterized by asymmetrical draping, broad shoulders, dolman sleeves, slim skirts, unique patterned fabrics, and splashes of color. His theme was unmistakable: American design for American women. Adrian: Silver Screen to Custom Label (Monacelli Press) is the first book to present the full range of designer's work and it's far-reaching influence on decades of fashion design.

Author Christian Esquevin discusses Adrian's natural talents for art and design; his studies in Paris, which led him to work on Broadway for Irving Berlin; his long tenure as chief designer for MGM; and his wildly successful fashion line.

Copiously illustrated with archival images from film and fashion runway alike, this volume showcases Adrian's hauntingly beautiful designs and unrivaled position as a creator of American style.

You can purchased the book on Amazon - HERE!

Garbo and Adrian

Most of Garbo's costumes were designed by MGM fashion designer – Adrian. He worked with Garbo over the course of most of her career.

1928, Adrian went to MGM and was hired as chief costume designer at the studio. During this time, Adrian worked with some of the biggest female stars of the day. Garbo and Adrian met in June 1928 for the first time while Greta was filming A woman of Affairs. MGM wanted him desperately to design new gowns for Garbo.

Photos from the late 1920s

Adrian left MGM in 1941 to set up his own independent fashion house, though he still worked closely with Hollywood. After he left MGM he said: "It was because of Garbo that I left M-G-M. In her last picture they wanted to make her a sweater girl, a real American type. I said, 'When the glamour ends for Garbo, it also ends for me. She has created a type. If you destroy that illusion, you destroy her.' When Garbo walked out of the studio, glamour went with her, and so did I."

New Marlene book: Did the legendary Marlene Dietrich hate Garbo?

Norma Bosquet, who was legendary filmstar Marlene Dietrich's secretary from 1977 - 1992 has published a memoir about her relationship with Marlene. In the book, Marlene Dietrich, les derniers secrets, you can read what Marlene may have thought about Garbo.

You can get the book  HERE!

The Garbo and Dietrich Rivalry

Edward Steichen's famous photomontage, USA 1934

From the very beginning the publicity departments of both studios (MGM and Paramount) sold Marlene Dietrich to the press as Garbo's biggest rival.

Shortly after completing work on Morocco following article appeared in the New York Times:
“Marlene Dietrich, German star who is now in Hollywood, will be given an early opportunity to show whether she is the long sought rival for Greta Garbo. According to present plans, Miss Dietrich is to be starred in a film based on the life of Mata Hari, which is also the subject of Garbo's next.”

It is not known what both ladies thought about all this “rivalry” stories which were invented about them. After all there is no doubt that it was for both careers advantageous.

Glad Påsk to all Garbo fans!

We wanted to pass along our best Happy Easter wishes to all Greta fans around the world!

Easter sunday, 18 years ago!

Each year at winter's end, wrote Selma Lagerlöf, all living creatures are filled with a deep longing for spring. At Easter, in Swedish folklore, the animals gather to watch the great crane dance and to think no more of struggling: "Instead, both the winged and those who had no wings all wanted to raise themselves eternally, lift themselves above the clouds, seek that which was hidden beyond them, leave the oppressive body that dragged them down to earth, and soar away toward the infinite." Greta died at 11:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday, 15 April 1990.

Garbo's Last Stand was named the 2008 Grand Prize Winner
of the AAA screenwriting contest!

Garbo's Last Stand  is a screenplay,  by screenwriter Jon James Miller, which was named the 2008 Grand Prize Winner of the AAA screenwriting contest by Creative Screenwriting Magazine.

Jon James Miller worked as a researcher and segment producer on cable documentaries for A&E Channel's award-winning Biography series, The History Channel, and Lifetime Intimate Portraits, among others. Miller is currently working on the novelization of Garbo's Last Stand, for publication in 2010.

Jon James Miller

Garbo's Last Stand is the story of Garbo boarding an ocean liner bound for Nazi Germany on the eve of World War II to assassinate her biggest fan - the Nazi Dictator himself.

Logline:

On the eve of World War II, silver screen siren Greta Garbo boards an ocean liner bound for Nazi Germany to assassinate her biggest fan – Adolf Hitler.

Short Synopsis:

Tabloid reporter Seth Mosier gets more than he bargained for when he stows away aboard an ocean liner in pursuit of reclusive movie star Greta Garbo.

He discovers Nazis are also onboard, intent on escorting Garbo to Germany to become mother to the Aryan race. Garbo has different plans: to assassinate Hitler and preempt World War II.  But when war is suddenly declared, a deadly stand-off on the open sea is inevitable.

Hitler a Garbo fan? Garbo wanted to shot Hitler?

It was written that Garbo revealed to friends that she had actually received a “fan letter” from Germany's ruthless dictator. “I wonder how it would feel to stand face to face with a man like Hitler,” she mused.

Early in World War II, Garbo was told that Adolf Hitler loved her films and admired Camille so much that he allowed its wide distribution in Germany, despite the ‘racial impurity' of director Cukor. The Führer reportedly “retained” a private copy of the film confiscated by his customs officers.

Adolf Hitler

Garbo, in turn, reportedly said she wanted to meet him and try to convince him to stop the war. She felt the power of her personality could alter the course of history, but “if not – I could shoot him”.  Who would dare to search Greta Garbo on a special invitation from the Führer?

The romantic idea that Garbo was willing to martyr herself by assassinating Hitler sounds apocryphal, but her friend Sam Green confirms it: “Once she said, ‘Mr Hitler was big on me. He kept writing and inviting me to come to Germany, and if the war hadn't started when it did, I would have gone and I would have taken a gun out of my purse and shot him, because I'm the only person who would not have been searched.'

Garbo in Europe, mid 1940s

That's a direct quote. She said it to me over dinner, and it was so out of character. It wasn't her habit to make up such a story to stop a dinner party. Or maybe not so out of character. As a child, she had had fantasies that ‘I might shorten the life of a cruel king and replace him by a romantic knight'”.

Considering her abhorrence of brutality of any kind, the scheme was uncharacteristically bold – especially from a woman who fretted that nothing she might do could possibly make a difference.

New Garbo tribute song!

A great new club track called My Greatest Greta, by French Pop group 3 Cold Man, will be in March 2008.

3 Cold Men were formed in late 1999. Their major influences are running from the britannic Cold-Wave down to the French and German Electro-Gothic styles from the 80's and 90's. Their musical style is known nowadays as Retro Wave.

The song My Greatest Greta first appeared on their 2005 released album Urban Rmxs. From 2005-2007,  they performed the song several times live and the audience loved it. In the lyrics they mention words like Divine, Flesh, Torrent, As you desire me, Queen Christina and the song sounds a bit like New Order's Blue Monday.

In November 2007 the American band DATA-BANK-A, did a special remix for My Greatest Greta (Garbot Radio Days Edit). This remix is exclusive track for download only and will be released in March 2008 and is the first single from their new album Photogram.

You can hear a remix (The 3cm's Dubious Dancing King 54 Rmx)   HERE!

Three Garbo films at 21th Nordic Film Festival in France

Three of Garbo's classic films will be shown at this years Nordic Film festival in Rouen (France).

They will screen La courtisane (Susan Lenox, USA 1931), Mata Hari and Comme tu me veux (As you desire me,USA 1932). The films will be screened from 5 to 16th of March 2008.

One of the most revered movie stars of the 20's and 30's and one of the most secret as well. The Divine, beautiful, distant and unreachable. Her first appearances in silent movies including Anna Karenina thrust her high up on the billboard. She was one of the few Hollywood stars to cross the frontier to talkies. In Anna Christie, the audience hears for the first time her deep and sensual voice, with a slight Swedish accent. The film catchphrase was Greta talks. After the relative failure of her last film Two-Faced Woman in 1941 Garbo puts a final stop to her career.

The "Garbo and Cecil Beaton section" Update

Beaton was one of the most important photographers of the last century. Some say that Beaton was obsessed with Greta Garbo.  In the 1930's he went to Hollywood with the secret desire to shot Garbo.  But Garbo, elusive as ever, did not want to meet him.

Years later they met again and Beaton made pictures of Garbo from 1946 to 1966. The complete archive of the photographs of Cecil Beaton is now copyrighted to Sotheby's.

Dresses inspired by Garbo

Fashion designers look to celebrities for inspiration. Cristina Ortiz (Ferragamo's creative director) is fascinated with Garbo.

The Milan fashion collections offered a little bit of everything: superbright colors, furry embellishments and even ironic military touches but the spotlight is certainly on designer Salvatore Ferragamo.

This year marks the company's 80th anniversary, one the family is celebrating with a big blowout bash next month in Shanghai. And the fall runway featured the debut of creative director Cristina Ortiz, who sent out a new sexpot vision for the storied house. Think glamour and Greta Garbo, whom the designer cited as her muse pre-show.

Pictures from the fashion show
image

Ortiz started out with a series of all-white getups that mined everything from Garbo's mannish wide-trouser suit look to the dramatic fur collars she sported in her early films. Embellishments, meanwhile, came primarily through curious metal clasps in lieu of seams à la Versace pins.

She used them and chain mail trim on everything from sexy jersey shifts to belted short coats and evening numbers, almost to the point of distraction. Ortiz's attempt at upping the glamour quotient — in keeping with Mr. Ferragamo's close Hollywood ties, she said — was a bit overzealous, especially for evening.

The designer simply skewed too discotheque flashy, and her drapy, flesh-baring gowns seemed better suited to New York City's Club Row than to Garbo in Grand Hotel.  More info  HERE and HERE!

Garbo still inspires young actresses today

"Hi Greta Fans! Nakis here. Here i have a couple of things where our Divine is mentionned and proves that she still inspires people today."

Chinese actress Tang Wei - "Greta Garbo is my inspiration. ..!"

First: Here is an interview with Chinese actress Tang Wei. She is the star of the new Ang Lee (he is the one who made  Brokeback Mountain among others) film Lust and Caution.

There is a lot of talk of this young girl and this is her first film and she says that Greta Garbo is her inspiration considering her as the ultimate actor. You can read it  HERE:

French actress Marion Cotillard - "I love Greta Garbo and was  fascinated by her as a child.."!

Another one inspired by the Divine is French actress Marion Cotillard who plays Edith Piaf in the film La vie en rose. She is nominated for an Oscar as best actress for the part.

Here is a clip, the actors at the interview are asked if there was a performance which inspired them to become actors. Marion mentions Garbo and  Camille  as her favorite performance. You can view it  HERE!

Garbo was voted the 31th sexiest movie star of all time by Premiere Magazine

Garbo was voted at Number 31.

Greta Garbo  THE ENCHANTRESS

The ethereal beauty of this Swedish superstar is legend, but her aloofness is wildly overstated. To see her silent films (such as The Temptress or Flesh and the Devil is a revelation, because the eroticism is achingly immediate. She made a graceful transition to sound, and in Hollywood's golden-era movies, unlike her glamour portraits, she comes vividly to life. She may have said she wanted to be left alone (in Grand Hotel but when she lightened up a bit in Ninotchka ("Garbo laughs!"), she was downright warm.

Garbo portraits at Edward Steichen exhibition

Forty years after his death, the original prints made by Edward Steichen (1879-1973) for Vanity Fair and Vogue have only now become available for public inspection.

This exhibition

This exhibition shows about 180 of his original prints, some featuring such luminaries as Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis , and the Musée d'Elysée, Lausanne.

Steichen photographs of Garbo

Steichen photographs of Garbo are really amazing just because she is seen in her natural mood -without the sometimes heavy costumes and make up of the MGM productions.

Unlike Man Ray and Erwin Blumenfeld, the two other giants of photography in the 1920s and 30s, who also lent their skills to the worlds of fashion and glamour, Steichen was much more pragmatic and practical in his approach, in contrast to their self-consciously avant-garde approaches.
