Garbo – The Feature Film is a bluff!

Buddy Bregman started production of the Garbo bio-pic in 2008. In early 2009 we heard that Björn Höglund would be one the executive producer with Anna-Karin Eskilsson as GG.

Anna-Karin Eskilsson as GG,  Photo copyrighted by: Samsung

Now Högland was arrested by Police in Los Angeles. Authorities took Björn Höglund into custody following a raid on the home of Swedish actress Anna-Karin Eskilsson, who was going to play the lead in this biopic about Garbo, according to the Realtid.se news website.

When police discovered Höglund hiding in Eskilsson’s apartment, the businessman first tried to elude capture by escaping in a car, leading police on a wild car chase through the streets of Hollywood before they finally arrested him on Friday afternoon. On Sunday, the actress Eskilsson was tightlipped about her role in the dramatic arrest of one of Sweden’s most-wanted white-collar criminals.

According this Swedish article, maybe there is a fraud behind this film. Derek Reisfield said, via email, that nobody has contacted him and he is not involved in this production.

Luise Rainer on Garbo: “After Nefertiti she was the most beautiful creature in the world.”

Luise Rainer (born January 12, 1910) is a retired German-born Austrian and American film actress. As she approaches her 100th birthday in 2009, the two-time Oscar winner talks to Mick Brown for The Telegraph about Hollywood and even Garbo.

Writer Mick Brown wrote that Photographs of Luise Rainer as a Hollywood star show a gamin beauty, with soulful eyes and rosebud lips. Rainer then told him that she was nobody to make a pass to and that she was very thin, like a boy, and very un-sexy. Then she she was speaking of Greta Garbo.

LR: “She was so beauuuuutiful...”

MB: “You knew Garbo?"

LR: “Not very intimately, but yes. I always thought that after Nefertiti she was the most beautiful creature in the world.”

It was Garbo, indirectly, who was responsible for her coming to Hollywood. Born in Dusseldorf, the daughter of a businessman, Rainer was a protegé of the great Max Rheinhart, and already a celebrated stage and screen actress in Germany, when she was spotted by a talent scout from MGM, who informed Louis B Mayer that he had found: THE NEXT GARBO

Michael Jackson R.I.P.

We've just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was only 50. We had to post this sad News here. Truly heartbreaking.

Mike 1958 - 2009

Garbo loved Michael Jackson!

It is said that Garbo waxed lyrical about Michael Jackson in an almost girlishly adoring way. “He is a handsome and so musical, I never miss seeing him on television if I can help it. What a star he is!”

In the 1980s, the The Globe magazine wrote: Michael Jackson met Garbo secretly. He wore a beard, sunglasses and cap so nobody can recognise him. He went to her apartment for a secret meeting.

Mike, you are a legend and legends live on... forever.

Great Temptress article

GG in The Temptress

Temptress: Garbo the Goddess

It has been almost twenty years since the passing of Greta Garbo and over sixty years since her last film; but she persists, waiting to captivate anyone who cares to cast eyes upon her enchanting image flickering on even the smallest screen.

Made in 1926, The Temptress is only Garbo's second American movie. It is one of the last great silent pictures.

The Temptress was adapted from popular silent era novelist Vicente Blasco-Ibanez, author of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The story begins in a Parisian costume party; back from a long sojourn the Argentine Engineer Robledo (Antonio Moreno), meets and falls in love with the mysterious Temptress Elena (Garbo) who also vows her undying devotion; the scene is wonderfully filmed by legendary cinematographer William Daniels. Robledo then visits the home of his friend Torre De Bianca (Armand Kaliz), the Marquis where he is shocked to find Garbo married to the Marquis. Fontenoy the banker (Marc McDermott), invites them to dinner and we see a clever long overhead tracking shot of the guests at table. The banker offers a toast to the Temptress who has driven him to financial ruin and suicide.

Robledo returns to Argentina where he is working on a massive dam. But Elena and her husband arrive in Argentina where Elena flirts with practically every available male, Torre's men all vie for the attention of Garbo. Robledo and bandito Manos Duras (Roy D'Arcy) savagely attack each other with whips, many men die, and the bandits blow up the dam; all because of one woman. The film was given two different endings; one tragic, one happy.

Garbo felt that M-G-M was typecasting her in The Temptress, after a similar vamp role in Torrent 1926. Garbo was not pleased with her performance in The Temptress but audiences and critics were captivated by her alluring screen presence. Garbo always felt awkward in Hollywood, she wrote to a friend in Sweden, "They don't have a type like me out here, so if I can't learn to act they'll soon tire of me, I expect." How wrong she was. The press was almost unanimous in praise. Among Garbo's many admirers, the Poet Carl Sandburg, in the Chicago Daily News writes: “Greta Garbo, slim, pale, like willows turning yellow in autumn…Gowned to kill, directed in such a manner that her face is full to the camera most of the time, she scores a downright triumph” and “Greta Garbo may be recommended as something indeed for all adults to look upon.” Dorothy Herzog in the New York Mirror describes how Garbo's "alluring mouth and volcanic, slumbrous eyes enfire men to such passion that friendships collapse."

Garbo's friend and mentor Swedish director Mauritz Stiller was removed from the picture after only 10 days of shooting by M-G-M production chief, Irving Thalberg, for many of the same reasons he had earlier fired Erich von Stroheim at Universal; an Inability to follow instructions and budgetary constraints. Fred Niblo, director of Blood and Sand 1922 and Ben-Hur 1925, was brought in to complete the film.

Like all of the truly great stars Garbo had that intangible screen presence; but she revealed something more; a mysterious, almost otherworldly quality that I have not seen in any other woman on the screen. Historian David Thomson attempts to describe the phenomenon: “The only way men can respond to a star is to gaze at it from another planet... she established herself forever as a magical figure, a true goddess, remote and austere, but intimate and touching…arguments may persist on whether she was wise or dumb, androgynous or uninterested. But sooner or later such trivia will evaporate and a mysterious truth will be left–she was photographed. She was all in the silver.”

'Garbo and me': Another play on Garbo?

There is an article which could be of some interest, since it talks about un upcoming theatre project (probably on Broadway) on the life of Garbo and in particular her relationship with Mimi Pollack (probably based on Tin Andersén Axell 2005 released book, Djävla älskade unge on, about the correspondance between Garbo and Pollack). The Broadway actress Kate Shindle, is to star in this play and it wiull be written and produced by Joshua Rosenblum and Joanne Sydney Lessner

A similar play premiered in europe last year. Go  HERE!

Broadway actress Kate Shindle

Rosenblum and Lessner may will writing a show just for Shindle. “We once said to her, ‘We'd love to write a musical for you,' and she said, ‘Well, I've always wanted to play Greta Garbo.' So the three are developing 'Garbo and Me.'

“The ‘Me' refers to Mimi Pollak, Garbo's life-long love,” says Lessner. “When Garbo was in Hollywood, she spent a lot of time saying she wished she could return to Sweden to be with Mimi, and yet, once she retired from films, she didn't do that.” Perhaps the musical will explain why.

The Valentina book

As you all now a Valentina book came out in February, 2009. The title is: Valentina - American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity. Valentina was the twentieth century's first American fashion designer celebrity, working and living on equal social footing with the clientele she dressed (Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Katharine Hepburn, Millicent Rogers, and Audrey Hepburn, among others).

One of the few designers who proved that America could live without the Parisian haute couture, her career is a much needed missing link in the history of American fashion. Beyond merely turning out show-stopping evening gowns, Valentina's exotic beauty, dramatic personality, and incomparable style earned her a legendary reputation.

Book cover

The book is truly a gem and a whole chapter is dedicated to Garbo titled: Enter Garbo. The book does also feature three never before published pictures of Garbo.

EXHIBITION

There is an exhibition going on about her in the Museum of the city of NY that started on 14th february 2009 and goes until May 17:

"Fit the century, forget the year."

Valentina Sanina Schlee (1899-1989) — known professionally simply as Valentina — was a fashion pioneer, clothing such luminaries as Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Katharine Cornell, and Mrs. Randolph Hearst and helping to invent American couture in the process. Hers was the quintessential New York success story: she arrived in the city as a young immigrant and reinvented herself as the epitome of style and glamour, becoming a fixture in the fashion pages and a major celebrity in her own right.

Valentina: American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity is the first exhibition to trace the career of this legendary designer and features never-before-exhibited gowns, accessories, photographs, and printed matter from the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the Valentina family, and other major collections.

Valentina had an unwavering view of personal style and once declared, "I hate fashion!" implying that while trends often bullied women, true style was immutable. She also advised "Fit the century, forget the year."

Never before exhibited examples from the designer's personal couture collection and other ephemera will be on view. Additional highlights of the exhibition are drawn from renowned public and private collections including the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum at FIT, the Brooklyn Museum, and the substantial holdings of the Museum of the City of New York.

You can see a report for the Exhibition  HERE!

New info on Garbo's real color photos

We want to thank Leo form America for sending us this information. When we started this homepage we created a section for Garbo's real color pictures. The origin on those photos are quite mystic and we did not know if they all were real.

real or not real?

Leo told us that the  photo was reproduced in the book Hollywood Color Portraits by John Kobal and published in 1981.  It is an autentic color photograph taken on the set by photographer Frank Grimes.  Now the mystery is solved yet we still do not know the orgin on those photos:

Still a mystery!!

The other pictures from Camille may have been taken by Clarence Sinclair Bull as stated in the description in the book: "One of only four color stills cameras in Hollywood belonged to MGM, where Clarence Sinclair Bull took the first color portraits of Greta Garbo in costume for her role as Marguerite Gautier in 'Camille'."

So, there is a good chance that the other Camille photos are real color and not colorizied.

New Garbo DVDs

Due of my busy schedule with my exams, i totally forgot to tell you this exciting News. Warner Brothers has introduced a new DVD-on-demand offering for fans of niche vintage films. At WarnerArchive.com, the studio is now selling about 150 of the more obscure and offbeat movies from its library, and they can be ordered directly for $19.95 each.

“Many of these films I do not believe would have had a home at retail, due to their narrow appeal,” said George Feltenstein, Warner's senior vice president for theatrical catalog marketing. They include Garbo films such as: The Kiss, Love, The Single Standard and Wild Orchids.

The only inconvenient is that they can only be shipped in the US. We do not know yet if they will also intend to commercialise them through Amazon too.

Press Release: Launch of the Parfums Grès Collection – Hommage à Greta Garbo

A year after the release of Hommage à Marlene Dietrich, Parfums Grès is preparing to launch a new trio of scents dedicated this time to Garbo called Hommage à Greta Garbo which will launch in the spring of 2009. Like Marlene Dietrich, Garbo was one of the famous customers of couturière Madame Grès.

The set comprises Mythos , Sphinx , Goddess in reference to the particular charisma that exuded from the star whom people could not wait to see laugh at long last in what must have been the most self-conscious laugh in history in Ninotchka (1939). And she did, beautifully so, and a bit strangely at the same time.

"With her classic beauty, her noble aura and an occasional playful wink of the eye, she (Greta Garbo) fascinated both men and women. The fact that she loved being alone and hated the media frenzy enhanced her appeal to the public. In the course of her 19-year film career in which she made 27 films, she gave only 14 interviews.

She was referred to as „the Goddess" or the „Swedish Sphinx". In contrast to other Hollywood stars she never gave an autograph, never attended the premieres of her films and never answered fan mail. In spite of this, she had a powerful effect on her times and the fashion of her day. The way she wore her make-up, styled her hair and dressed greatly influenced the trends of the Thirties." ...

Parfums Grès Collection – Hommage à Greta Garbo

Mythos – Hommage à Greta Garbo is a floral fruity perfume that interprets elegance in a new and youthful way, for fruity notes are especially popular with younger women. The head note tantalizes with the scents of apples, oranges, black currants and pineapple. The classic, elegant floral accents unfold in the heart note - rose, freesia and peony - typical ingredients found in sophisticated French perfumes. Subtle sensuousness permeates the whole fragrance composition through the delicate base note of musk, sandalwood and iris.

Sphinx – Hommage à Greta Garbo is a delicate fresh-floral perfume. The essences of exotic blossoms blend in a refined manner with woody and fruity fragrances. First the delicate scents of litchi, peach and Yuzu (a precious citrus fruit from Asia) captivate the senses. After a few minutes the exhilarating heart note of lotus blossoms, rose petals and white peony unfolds, then merges perfectly with the discreetly disarming base notes of cedar, musk and patchouli.

Goddess – Hommage à Greta Garbo is a floral-oriental perfume, a fragrance that expresses the elegant sensuousness of the great artist. In Goddess the most beautifully eroticizing fragrance essences delicately cast their spell: The head note mesmerises with plum, mandarin orange and cardamom. In the heart note, a voluptuous cocktail of cinnamon, heliotrope and jasmine unfolds. The base note beguiles with sandalwood, moss, vanilla and ambergris, merging wonderfully with the skin. The bottle and packaging were designed by the Parisian design studio Aesthete.

The three fragrances of the Parfums Grès Collection Hommage à Greta Garbo will be offered as Eau de Parfum in 60 ml bottles, each at a price of CHF 89.00 or Euro 59.00. Available as of Spring 2009 at selected perfumeries.
