All Garbo fans do know with grief that one of her silents has gone lost, THE DIVINE WOMAN from 1927. Just 9 minutes of the film could be rediscovered and can be seen now on DVD or on special portraits. Maybe the Garbo world is particularly sad about the loss because it was t h a t film which was the flash point of her sobriquet: THE DIVINE.
Interestingly, there are even more Swedish, German and American Garbo productions, like screen-tests and all the many cut scenes, which can't be seen anymore. They haven't been released finally, were just planned or have gone lost. What a pity! Imagine the additional Garbo material we could have if archiving and preservation would have been better and safer or think of the terrible war which has destroyed so many artistic treasures!
Fabulous witnesses of Garbo's art and even of her later come back efforts (screen tests) will mostly stay unknown for us and can't prove her great talents anymore and the fascination of her beauty.
But who knows? Everything is possible. Maybe we will be lucky and experience the recovery of unreleased and lost material showing Greta in new dimensions. Everything that has gone lost can be found again. Let's hope so and keep our fingers crossed...
