“DUCHESS SCREEN-TEST” BY JOSEPH VALENTINE (USA 1949)

In May, 1949, Garbo made three screen-tests for her planned comeback film The Duchess Of Langelais. The first was made with cinematographer, Joseph Valentine on May 5, 1949.

Valentine shot around 23 minutes of black-and-white film. The full footage of Valentine's screen test is still unreleased.

“DUCHESS SCREEN-TEST” BY JAMES WONG HOWE (USA 1949)

On May 25, the second test was made by James Wong Howe at the United Artists/Chaplin Studio lot in Hollywood. Howe and later Daniels shot over 817 feet of film.

The full footage of the  Howe's screen test is still unreleased and it is said that it was best of all the three who were made.

“DUCHESS SCREEN-TEST” BY WILLIAM DANIELS (USA 1949)

On May 25, the third test was made by William Daniels, at Universal-International Studios. Over 817 feet of film were shot and highlighted both men's work. Daniels and Howe some times earlier, shot over 817 feet of film.

The full footage of Daniels screen tests is still unreleased. The full footage of all three screen tests are still unreleased.

Garbo: Did she ever do a color test on film?

We always get Emails from people saying that there was a color film test or they keep asking us about it. We again contacted Mark A. Vieira and he told us in August 2014 that this is not very likely!

If Technicolor tests were made at Universal for the cancelled Walter Wanger production (‘Lover and Friend’ aka ‘The Duchess de Langeais’), they would have been found with the other Walter Wanger tests (Howe, Daniels, Valentine). There was no color there.
If such a thing existed, it would have turned up in some form. Frame enlargements from the Wanger tests started showing up more than thirty years ago. They were no secret.

So, now we have it confirmed. No color film tests were made.
