ODALISKE FRAN SMOLNA “TESTS” (SWEDEN 1924)

Before heading to Berlin to promote Gösta Berling Saga and start co-production for this German produced film, Stiller verifiable did some ‘tests’ in the famous Razunda filmstudio in Solna/Sweden.

It is possible that both, Garbo and Hanson, were there and did some tests for the film before the production crew did the ‘location’ tests in  Constantinople/Turkey.

ODALISKE FRAN SMOLNA “LOCATION TESTS” (TURKEY 1924)

After the successful Gösta Berling Saga, Stiller had another project in mind with Greta and his “Gösta” team. They wanted to film in Constantinople/Turkey.

It was going to be a German co-production with Trianon films. Conrad Veidt and Einar Hanson were also cast in the film. Stiller's Cameraman Julius, filmed some location tests with Greta and Hanson.

Due of money problems the production was stopped and the film was never made. The filmed "location Tests" footage was confiscated by the Turkey customs office. It is lost today.

G.W.PABST - SCREENTEST/ FIRST TAKES (GERMANY 1925)

The Screentest of Garbo

On February 16, she made a film test with Pabst. Sets had been constructed on a stage in the Zeppelin industrial area of Staaken, a suburb of Berlin.

No more infos are known and the test is lost or was destroyed.

The first takes of Garbo

Stiller made a private arrangement with Pabst for Garbo to be photographed on Kodak-Pathé film, then considered the finest film stock available (most European productions used the less sensitive Agfa film).

Due in part to the especially strong lights they had used, the test with cameraman Guido Seeber revealed a nervous twitch. The more film they shot, the more it became obvious to Greta that something was wrong.

Some 290 of the first 300 feet shot were allegedly deemed unusable until Seeber employed an old cinematic trick: by shooting at a faster film speed, the blinking would barely be perceptible when the footage was projected at the normal speed.

This footage is lost or was destroyed.
