This original musical was presented for the first time in Stockholm, 2002. They had the ambition to present it one day on Broadway (USA) and perhaps London (England) but the musical wasn't a success in Sweden. The musical is about Garbo's life and was composed by Jim Steinman. It got great critics but it closed in 2002 at the Oscarstetern in Stockholm. Gunilla Backman played Garbo on stage.

Starting in Sweden when Greta was a young girl, living in poverty and her father's death, then we see her discovery by Stiller and subsequent one by Mayer and Hollywood, meeting with Gilbert, relationship with Mercedes de Acosta, talking debut and there is also a passage from filming " Queen Christina " as they prepare to shoot the final famous shot where she is told to think of nothing.

We also see her later in the 1940s and her meeting with Beaton who takes some photographs of her but then sells them to a magazine and betrays her. The play finishes with a meeting with a fan on the streets of New York.

GUNILLA BACKMAN

The shows star was Gunilla Backman. In 2002 she opened the world premiere of "Garbo the Musical" in the leading role of Greta Garbo. Music by Jim Steinman and Michael Reed.  In 2006 she recorded the song "Et enkelt liv" on her  album "nära mig". Earlier in 2005 she performed songs from "Garbo" at Stockholms postalmuseum's exhibit about Greta Garbo.  In 2006 Backman won the prestigious Guldmasken award for her role as Donna in the popular musical "Mamma mia" and decided it was time to release her first solo album.

In 2006, Naked Wire asked Gunilla a few questions about "Garbo – the musical":

What did you think about the musical and you role as Greta Garbo?
I loved playing the part of Garbo! Her destiny and life moved me somehow. The music is wonderful i think! The manuskript could be worked on and the direction of the piece. To be more about her as a person.

Do you have a favourite song from the musical?
I loved all the songs, but "Nothing" (Inget), "Life no place to hide in"(Kan man fly från livet) and "A simple time" (En enkel tid) are favourites. I have just recorded "A simple time" on my new Album

What do you think was the reason for the shows failure in Stockholm?
Several things...Difficult for a new piece to break through, people mixed it up with another musical the same year that was about Garbo wich wasn´t so good..,the rewiews in the big papers was not so good. It was an expencive produktion.

Do you think that the musical will ever get a second chance?
I think a produktion in the future will be done. Just a matter of time!
