Alexandria 's: 1937 Makeup and Hair Styles (Nom.) - Camille

Alexandria 's: 1939 Comedy Screenplay (Nom.) - Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, Walter Reisch - Ninotchka

– 1930 was the first year represented; as far as I know, there are no Alexandria's given for 1920s films. I'm surprised Ninotchka didn't do better for the year 1939. Otherwise, these are good (if not excellent) choices -- especially the “supporting” nominations.

mid 1950s - Guinness Book of Records

In 1950, Garbo got and entry as the most beautiful woman ever lived in the Guinnes Book of Records.

1950 - Movie Laurel Award

In 1950 February Garbo won the Movie Laurel Award.

It was for the Best Actress who have worked in the film Industry for more than 25 years

Broadcast Information Bureau

Broadcast Information Bureau: (1975 poll of 1,500 film and TV executives) All-Time Best (#17) - Ninotchka

The American Film Institute

The American Film Institute lists began in 1977 (no Garbo film in that “Top Fifty”):

American Film Institute: (CBS telecast 6/15/99 “AFI Screen Legends”) All-Time Actress #5 - Greta Garbo

Greatest Performance (1980 They Didn't Win the Oscars poll): All-Time #17 & 1937 #1 - Greta Garbo – Camille

Greatest Performance (1980 They Didn't Win the Oscars poll): All-Time #23 & 1939 #3 - Greta Garbo – Ninotchka

– Good book, if you can find it. Interesting breakdowns between “Critics” and “Readers” polls used; because Garbo did better with the “Readers” than the “Critics” in this instance.

The National Film Registry

The National Film Registry began selecting films in 1989:

National Film Registry: 1990 Selection - Ninotchka

National Film Registry: 2006 Selection - Flesh and the Devil

This is considered one of the greater honours, I understand.

Alternate Oscar

Alternate Oscar (1993 Alternate Oscars, Danny Perry): 1931/32 Best Actress - Joan Crawford - Grand Hotel

Alternate Oscar (1993 Alternate Oscars, Danny Perry): 1932/33 Picture (Nom.) - Rouben Mamoulian - Queen Christina
Alternate Oscar (1993 Alternate Oscars, Danny Perry): 1932/33 Best Actress - Greta Garbo - Queen Christina

Alternate Oscar (1993 Alternate Oscars, Danny Perry): 1937 Actress (Nom.) - Greta Garbo - Camille

Alternate Oscar (1993 Alternate Oscars, Danny Perry): 1939 Actress (Nom.) - Greta Garbo - Ninotchka

Entertainment Weekly

Entertainment Weekly published lists in both magazine and book form:

EW (8/13/93 “30 Greatest Movie Stars”): All-Time #12 - Greta Garbo - (1927 Rec. Flesh and the Devil)
EW (8/13/93 “30 Greatest Movie Stars”): All-Time #12 - Greta Garbo - (1933 Rec. Queen Christina)
EW (8/13/93 “30 Greatest Movie Stars”): All-Time #12 - Greta Garbo - (1939 Rec. Ninotchka)

EW (Fa/96 “100 Greatest Stars”): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1927 Rec. Love)
EW (Fa/96 “100 Greatest Stars”): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1932 Rec. Grand Hotel)
EW (Fa/96 “100 Greatest Stars”): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1933 Rec. Queen Christina)
EW (Fa/96 “100 Greatest Stars”): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1935 Rec. Anna Karenina)
EW (Fa/96 “100 Greatest Stars”): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1937 Rec. Camille)
EW (Fa/96 “100 Greatest Stars”): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1939 Rec. Ninotchka)

EW (1997 100 Greatest Stars of…): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1927 Rec. Flesh and the Devil)
EW (1997 100 Greatest Stars of…): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1933 Rec. Queen Christina)
EW (1997 100 Greatest Stars of…): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1935 Rec. Anna Karenina)
EW (1997 100 Greatest Stars of…): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1937 Rec. Camille)
EW (1997 100 Greatest Stars of…): All-Time #25 - Greta Garbo - (1939 Rec. Ninotchka)

The most interesting thing, to me, about Entertainment Weekly is how their recommended (Rec.) films change from time to time. I guess they re-evaluate?

Golden Armchair

Golden Armchair (1996 Encyclopedia of Movie Awards, Michael Gebert): 1929 Best Actress - Greta Garbo - The Kiss

Golden Armchair (1996 Encyclopedia of Movie Awards, Michael Gebert): 1932 Best American Film - Grand Hotel

Golden Armchair (1996 Encyclopedia of Movie Awards, Michael Gebert): 1932 Best Actress - Joan Crawford - Grand Hotel

– Gebert considered The Kiss to be Garbo's greatest silent film performance, and called Anna Karenina her greatest performance (though the latter didn't win for 1935).

Great Performance

Great Performance (2002 100 Great Film Performances, John DiLeo): 1928 - Greta Garbo - A Woman of Affairs

Premiere

Premiere (4/05 “50 Greatest Movie Stars of…”): All-Time #8 - Greta Garbo - (1930 Rec. Anna Christie)

Premiere (4/05 “50 Greatest Movie Stars of…”): All-Time #8 - Greta Garbo - (1931 Rec. Mata Hari)

Premiere (4/05 “50 Greatest Movie Stars of…”): All-Time #8 - Greta Garbo - (1932 Rec. Grand Hotel)

Premiere (4/05 “50 Greatest Movie Stars of…”): All-Time #8 - Greta Garbo - (1935 Rec. Anna Karenina)

Premiere (4/05 “50 Greatest Movie Stars of…”): All-Time #8 - Greta Garbo - (1937 Rec. Camille)

Premiere (4/05 “50 Greatest Movie Stars of…”): All-Time #8 - Greta Garbo - (1939 Rec. Ninotchka)

Premiere (4/06 “100 Greatest Performances of…”): All-Time #25 & 1939 #1 - Greta Garbo – Ninotchka

– Interesting, for Premiere magazine's 2006 declaration of Garbo's Ninotchka as “All-Time #25” performance, because this is the only time Garbo's Ninotchka bests Vivien Leigh's Gone With the Wind. Previously, Garbo would be #2 (as in her new York Film Critics position) or tie Leigh (as both Leigh and Garbo won Halliwell Rosettes).

1980 - The Order of the Polar Star

1986 - Illis Quorum Award

The Illis Quorum (Illis Quorum Meruere Labores) Award, (means: For those Whose Labors Have Deserved It) is one of the highest award that can be conferred upon an individual Swedish citizen by the Government of Sweden.

Introduced in 1784 by H.M. the King Gustav III of Sweden. First awarded in 1785, the Illis Quorum, a gold medal, is given to those who have made outstanding cultural and artistic contributions to Sweden.

The Illis Quorum

In autumn of 1986 Garbo was awarded the Illis Quorum by the Swedish government. This mark of distinction was presented to her in New York by the Swedish ambassador in Washington, Wilhelm Wachtmeister, who was accompanied by his wife.
“The award ceremony took place at my friend Jane Gunther's, who is much better than I am at arranging receptions,” Garbo told her friend Sven Broman proudly. “The ambassador made a speech and it was all very grand. I felt very honoured.”
When Broman heard about the award he sent Garbo a postcard to congratulate her and wrote: Now there is only the Nobel prize left!

Garbo had received almost all the Swedish medals and honours anyone can get. When Broman and Garbo met a while later the first thing she said was: “Your postcard about “Now there is only the Nobel prize left” was the most amusing post I got all year, Mr Broman.”

Garbo returned to it several times, which I naturally found very gratifying. She touted what I had said about the Nobel prize to such an extent that there were moments when I thought she had taken the whole matter more seriously than I intended. But Garbo loved making jokes.

“As you know, there is no Nobel prize for actors, so it would have to be the Peace prize in this case. Well, your films have made people happy all over the world, brought people together... and that's the way to create peace, isn't it?” Broman said.
