Arno the Garbo (2001)

Author: Gary Crew
Publisher: Lothian Books
More Info: 316 pages, This is a childrens book and not related to Garbo
Re-release:  2008

Symphonis:
This funny but different picture book tells the poignant story of Arno, who lives in the middle of a junk yard. The other children at his school tease him because of this. His one escape is his hobby of creating things out of junk. He decides to make a perfect mechanical boy in his own image and people believe it is him, marvelling at the difference in Arno.

However, human nature being what it is, rumblings amongst his peers start to indicate that everyone is sick of the perfect Arno. Perplexed at this, Arno does a bit of serious thinking and reveals to all in the town park that the perfect Arno is nothing but his own creation from a pile of junk. Because of this, people finally see Arno for what he is and start to respect him for his inventiveness and talents. The story ends where it begins – with Arno at home surrounded by junk, but he has gained the respect of his fellow human beings and is better off than most anyway because of his lifestyle. Craig Smith's illustrations add a great deal to the text as he interprets Gary Crew's words with an individual style and flair in Arno the Garbo.

Because of its content this book can be appreciated by children from middle primary to middle secondary levels.

The Bones of Garbo Cover

Author: Trudy Lewis
Publisher: Ohio St Univ Pr
More Info: A collection of for short stories, a spoken words Cd-rom was also released

Symphonis:
The Bones of Garbo rattles skeletons in the house of fiction. These stories revel in sexual experiment and linguistic play. Lewis finds her subjects on the wrong side of the sheets and the tracks, in marginal neighborhoods where characters confront the cost of motherhood, the mystery of desire and the pain of invasion, the meaning of race and tribe.

Ultimately, these seekers reach connection by way of confrontation. In Waiting Period, a couple creates their own commitment ritual when they go together to take an AIDS test; in Goddess Love, a young woman struggles with an otherworldly attraction toward her pagan roommate; in All Hallow's Leaves, an African American teenager meets his demons in a fundamentalist haunted house. Lewis is relentless but compassionate, and her fiction mixes bitter herbs and honey on the tongue.

In the title story, Bones of Garbo, a teenage girl aspiring to be an actress and undergoing her first role as an ingnue, treats the reader to the life and loves of Greta Garbo as her own coming of age story unfolds.

Reviews:

From Publishers Weekly
Growing up in a "quasi-slum" in 1940s and '50s Brooklyn, Reva Hess thought of the radio as her best friend, so it's no surprise she turned out to be obsessed by stars of the studio and screen. Now living in Santa Monica, Calif., with her difficult, alcoholic mother, 19-year-old Reva hangs around the fringes of premieres scavenging autographs and trying to figure out what to do with her life. Roy Darnell, an old hero of hers from her Brooklyn radio days, is now a Hollywood B-lister who moves among the A-listers (Bogart, Bacall, Burt Lancaster), and his narration alternates with Reva's—and also with that of his alter ego, Jack Havoc, the hardboiled detective Roy portrays on TV and, increasingly, in real life. When, after a bad divorce, Roy accidentally kills his ex-wife, Adrienne, "Beverly Hills interior decorator to the stars," and realizes Reva can place him at the crime scene, he knows that he'll need to make sure the girl doesn't talk. But Reva is going through her own emotional battle—and she wouldn't betray an old friend, would she? An energetic, if uneven, portrait of the stars and the starstruck, this novel offers a dash of old-time Hollywood glitz and an ending that's cinematic and bittersweet.

From Booklist
Set in 1950s Hollywood, Ludwig's story features many real-life figures: Bogie, Jack Warner, and Burt Lancaster among them. Much more interesting than the name-dropping is Ludwig's take on Tinseltown as seen through the eyes of two fictional characters: actor Roy Darnell and fan Reva Hess. Roy starts out doing radio voices in New York, and avid autograph-seeker Reva becomes his biggest fan. When Roy moves to Hollywood to star in the macho Jack Havoc TV series, Reva and her mother soon follow. Life is going fine for Roy, except for two impediments: his contract with Warner and his wife, Addie. After catching him with another woman, Addie hopes to take Roy to the cleaners in a divorce. Warner refuses to let Roy out of his contract, and when Roy's lawyer finds a legal loophole, the Old School studio head blackballs Roy with every other studio. Imagined conversations between Roy and alter ego Jack Havoc get old fast, but the novel still works as an insider's look at Hollywood in the no-holds-barred studio era. A natural for fans of Edward Wright's similar John Ray Horn series.

More Info:
It is NOT a Garbo book. They just use Garbo's name. 288 pages Description: In the morning of her thirtieth birthday, ex-con-turned-paparazza Nina Zero scales the Malibu hillside above the estate of a reclusive film star who hasn't been seen in a decade. Within the next few hours, a mysterious gunman shoots her, a deadly brushfire almost smokes her, an arson investigator accuses her, and a toothless Rottweiler adopts her as his new best friend.

Accompanied by the toothless Rott, Zero goes on the hunt, compelled to prove that someone else set fire to the star's estate to keep the cops from jailing her for arson and -- when charred bones are discovered in the ashes -- murder. The killers are equally interested in finding her, and their desperation escalates to a bone-chilling series of violent encounters in which Nina plays hunter one moment and prey the next.

Sandy and Garbo: One family,
one neighborhood, one crazy dog  (USA 2007)

Author: Chuck Hajinian
Publisher: Dog Ear Publishing, LLC

More Info:
This is NOT a Garbo book. It has 208 pages. Review: Although Movie Stars and famous people will read this book, we have not asked for their comments or opinions at this time. They would be too biased and their comments would have little value. "There is nothing like curling up with a funny read. You will feel good all over. Garbo and Sandy are the best." - Garbo's mother, Lucy "If the book were a restaurant meal, it would be 5 Stars-and probably be eaten by Sandy." - Sandy's Vet, Dr Osgood "A humorous look at an American-Armenian family and an amazing dog. You will laugh and cry. It is difficult to admit, Garbo has created a comical masterpiece." - A true critic, Garbo's mother-in-law, Shirley " Soon to be a major motion picture-if we can find a producer and some actors, and a movie studio with a contract. Hello?" - Chuck Garbo Hajinian, DDS "Reminded me of "MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING" on steroids with a dog." - Sandy's neighbor, Jim, not a relative.
