Greece, August 1965

Garbo was invited together on the yacht of Baroness Cecile de Rothschild. Garbo accepted the invitation to go on a cruise from Saint-Raphaël to the isle of La Maddalena (off the coast of Sardinia) and on to the Greek Isles on one of the family's smaller yachts, the Sieta.

Other guests would include Austrian industrialist Friedrich Ledebur, Princess Jeanne-Marie de Broglie, and Cecil Beaton. Garbo was photographed on and off boat.

 

Beaton thought Garbo's gray hair was the only significant sign of her maturity.

 

Beaton wrote of Cécile during the cruise: “She is very happy to have Greta on board – for she is besotted. She snickers at everything Greta does – even if it is a slap directed against herself. ... With Greta she is a kid hynotised by a snake.”
