Though audiences could never see their color, her eyes were a translucent grayish blue. The famous eyelashes were quite real, the nose, slightly large for any other face but hers; the mouth and lips, classically severe and slightly drooping at the corners in a hint of sorrow that would increase with age.
The geometry of the face transcended its components and gave it a haunting blend of intensity and detachment, as if there were two people behind it – observer and participant – and the observer was always mildly amused by the strange behavior of the participant. Very little make-up ever adorned it.
