Garbo's Face

Though audiences could never see their color, her eyes were a translucent grayish blue. The famous eyelashes were quite real, the nose, slightly large for any other face but hers; the mouth and lips, classically severe and slightly drooping at the corners in a hint of sorrow that would increase with age.

The geometry of the face transcended its components and gave it a haunting blend of intensity and detachment, as if there were two people behind it – observer and participant – and the observer was always mildly amused by the strange behavior of the participant. Very little make-up ever adorned it.

Offscreen, just a dash of powder, a little lipstick, eyebrow pencil and her hair – fine as a baby's. She used olive oil for her skin and loved to sunbath.
